12.2007, Alexandra Perschau

The US-based Organic Exchange recently published new figures on the organic cotton market for the 2006/07 season. It announced a 53% increase of fibre production within one year to 57.931 tons and is optimistic to further increases for the coming seasons.

According to the "Organic Cotton Market Report 2007", organic cotton is currently grown in 24 countries around the globe. Top 5 producing countries are Turkey, India, China, Syria and Peru, with about 45% of the global production in the middle east (Turkey, Syria and Israel) and ca. 33% in Southeast Asia (India and Pakistan).

The increase in production is directly linked to an increase in gobal organic cotton products sales, from US Dollar 245 Million in 2001 to US Dollar 583 Million in 2005. Sales are projected to further increase to US dollar 2,6 billion by the end of 2008. According to Organic Exchange, the top 5 users of organic cotton in 2005 were Nike (USA), Coop Switzerland, Patagonia (USA), Otto (Germany) and Sam's Club/Wal-Mart (USA).
